Dr. Ku has a PhD in Health Sciences (Public Health), a Master in Health Sciences (Transcultural Mental Health by Research), a Master in Health Sciences (Mental Health by Coursework), a Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing and a Graduate Certificate in University Teaching (GCUT).   During her Masters and PhD candidature, Dr. Ku had received several scholarships/research grants.  These included The University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship, New Zealand (2015), Australian College of Nursing Post-graduate Scholarship Grant (2011 & 2013), Australia Post-Graduate Award (APA) (2011),  Australian Nursing Federation Annual Research Grand (2009), and Melbourne Research Scholarship, The University of Melbourne (2002).  The most prestigious award was the Endeavour Prime Minister Australia/Asia Award as a Visiting Higher Degree by Research Scholar at the School of International Culture, South China Normal University (2011-2012) to establish academic and professional collaboration between Australia and Asia.  This visit had added values to completing her PhD thesis in 2017, given that all the participants in her study were ethnic Chinese immigrants in Australia.  Details of her conference presentations / research publications can be accessed on Research Gate Website. https://www.researchgate.net/scientific-contributions/Tan-Kan-Ku-2058023419
In 2019, Dr. Ku established social research collaboration with international academics in China and America.  In Beijing Institute of Technology, Zhuhai (BITZH), Dr. Ku co-developed teaching and learning programmes in the Bachelor of Business Studies Course “Organisational Behaviour, BUS2020”.  The formative assessment requires the students to evaluate staff members’ attitudes and its impact in a business organisation based on the Individualism-Collectivism Constructs (IND-COL) and Myers-Biggs Type Indicator (MBTI). Her work is informed by the more she considers  colleagues and students’ different cultures, the better she will be able to determine their work behaviour and create a positive organisational atmosphere that enhance everyone to perform well at the workplace.
In 2023, Dr. Ku also co-developed the Community Mental Health Literacy programmes with BITZH for Chinese immigrants of Non-English-Speaking Background (NESB) in New Jersey, USA. These two initiatives are for developing stigma reduction strategies attached to mental illness in China and USA.  The first draft of a paper “A Case Study of a Client with a Diagnosis of Schizophrenia in a Community Care Unit (CCU) in Melbourne, Australia” was written by Dr. Ku, edited by the Data Analyst / Manager at BITZH, and finalised by the Data / Project Manager, a Teaching Specialist at Stockton University in New Jersey.  The Teaching Specialist presented the project at the Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (NEDSI) 52nd Annual Conference in Washington on March 30, 2023.  He reported an overwhelming feedback at the conference and  “many people expressed interests to work together in related field, both in terms of research method/approach and clinical practices via CCU model.  The response and feedback were much more than I expected and a bit overwhelming.  Good job all around!” (WeChat message dated 4/3 2:33 pm).
In clinical practice, Dr. Ku had worked in England, New Zealand, Australia and in Saudi Arabia. She integrated her clinical experience in developing curriculum and resources in training mental health workers at RMIT, Australia Catholic University, Melbourne Polytechnic, Victoria University Polytechnic and at The Institute of Health and Management (IHM).   Dr. Ku believes training mental health workers is paramount, given the increasing cultural diversity of our population and the unfortunate but alarming increase in the prevalence of mental illness.  Tan Kan Ku's research works | RMIT University, Melbourne (RMIT) and other places
