May (Congxiao) Mei
Master of Social Work
Lecturer (Level 4), School of Social Work, IHM
BIO
My professional background is in counselling, social work, and teaching, and I am a registered social worker. As an adult university student from China myself, I developed a strong passion for supporting overseas university students. Driven by this passion, I have been mentoring international students who experience challenges adjusting to daily life and academic expectations in Melbourne.
At IHM, I have been a tutor for multiple units and a mentor in the Mentoring Program, supporting students’ learning, wellbeing, and sense of belonging.
I also provide counselling services to families and individuals from CALD communities who face difficulties accessing the support they need due to cultural or language barriers.
Guided by my own lived experience and the insights gained from working closely with people from diverse backgrounds, I am particularly interested in researching the barriers and challenges experienced by individuals from overseas when accessing health care and social services.
