BIO
Annie Chang is a bilingual Neonatal Trained Registered Nurse (Mandarin/English) with over 30 years of neonatal nursing experience in tertiary healthcare settings in Australia and Taiwan. Her clinical expertise includes neonatal intensive care, developmental care, advanced respiratory management (including HFJV), and family-centred care models.
Annie has been deeply involved in neonatal clinical research, contributing as part of multidisciplinary research teams to national and international projects. With her Master of Nursing (Research) thesis submitted for examination, she continues to build a research profile that focuses on psychometric validation of neonatal screening instruments and fathers’ experiences in neonatal care.
A committed advocate for family-integrated neonatal care, Annie has actively promoted this practice through professional organisations such as the Australian College of Neonatal Nurses (ACNN). She had served as the Chair of the Neonatal Developmental Care Special Interest Group of ACNN, where she leads initiatives that support best practices in developmental and family-centred care.
Annie regularly shares her research findings at international and national neonatal conferences, including PSANZ, ACNN Conferences, and other global symposiums, contributing to ongoing dialogue and advancement in neonatal practice and research. Her career reflects a strong commitment to bridging clinical excellence, education, research, and professional leadership.

FIELDS OF RESEARCH
Annie Chang’s research and clinical interests centre on advancing high-quality, family-integrated neonatal care through robust assessment tools, developmental care models, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Her work bridges frontline NICU practice, clinical research and education to improve outcomes for preterm and critically ill infants and their families.
Neonatal Intensive Care (NICU) Developmental Care in Neonates Neonatal screening and assessment tools Evidence-based neonatal practice ESL and international student support in nursing education Clinical teaching and mentorship Psychometric validation of neonatal screening instruments Neonatal assessment tools Fathers’ experiences in neonatal settings Family-integrated care in NICU Neonatal neurodevelopment Environmental influences on neonatal outcomesNeonatal Intensive Care & Developmental Care – Extensive experience in the care of preterm and critically ill infants, including advanced respiratory support and developmental care practices that optimise neurodevelopment and minimise stress in the NICU environment.
Neonatal Screening and Assessment Tools – Focus on the psychometric validation and clinical application of neonatal screening instruments, including tools used to assess neonatal abstinence syndrome in acute clinical settings.
Family-Integrated Care and Fathers’ Experiences – Research and quality improvement work exploring family-integrated care models, parents’ and particularly fathers’ experiences in neonatal settings, and strategies to strengthen parent-infant bonding and family-centred practice.
Neonatal Neurodevelopment and Environment – Interest in how environmental factors such as noise and unit design influence neonatal outcomes, and how structured developmental care and education can support optimal neurodevelopment.
Annie contributes to peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and quality improvement projects that promote evidence-based neonatal practice, professional education, and supportive learning environments for both families and healthcare professionals in NICU settings.
