Course Overview

After successfully completing the certificate at IHM, students will transition into the Master of Science in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at Arizona State University (ASU). This 12-month program (20 credit hours) focuses on advanced concepts in biomedical informatics, data science, and healthcare technology applications. The program prepares students to take on leadership roles in healthcare, research, and data-driven decision-making.

The ASU curriculum includes core courses such as Foundations of Biomedical Informatics Methods, Introduction to Clinical Environments, and Problem Solving in Biomedical Informatics, along with electives that provide opportunities to specialise in healthcare systems or data science. Graduates of this program are equipped with the skills to lead innovation in healthcare technology, drive data-informed decision-making, and contribute to advancements in clinical informatics and healthcare data analysis.

Pathway to ASU

Upon completing the Certificate in Biomedical Informatics and Data Science at IHM, students will transition to ASU to complete 12 months of advanced coursework, earning 32 credit hours. The ASU curriculum further develops students’ knowledge of biomedical informatics, focusing on healthcare data analysis, biostatistics, and healthcare system workflows.

Entry requirements

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in biology, computer science, engineering, nursing, or statistics from a recognised university.
  • Basic competencies in general biology, statistics, and computer programming. (BIO 181 or equivalent), statistics (HCD 300 or STP 226 or equivalent) and computer programming (BMI 110 or CSE 110 or equivalent).
  • Competitive applicants typically have a “B” (3.00 on a 4.00 scale) grade point average in the last 60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours of undergraduate coursework. If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, your application may still be considered by the department.
  • English proficiency (TOEFL, IELTS, or equivalent).

Additional Application Information

  • Applicants who have earned degrees in other unrelated fields with appropriate academic backgrounds or postbaccalaureate training also will be considered.
  • A one- to two-page statement of purpose is required. Students must explain why they are interested in the program, outline their background, describe expected outcomes from the program, identify potential faculty advisors and areas of research, and elaborate on how the degree will support their goals. To accommodate applicants’ diverse backgrounds, the statement must include at least one paragraph that describes the applicant’s educational and professional background in the following three areas: computer science; statistics and mathematics; and biological sciences and health sciences.

English proficiency requirements

  • TOEFL: Minimum score of 80 on the TOEFL iBT® (testing center only; no home editions accepted).
  • IELTS: Minimum overall band score of 6.5 (Academic).
  • PTE: Minimum score of 60.
  • Duolingo: Minimum score of 105.

* The 24 months STEMP OPT extension is an additional benefit from United Stated Citizenship and Immigration services that allows International students in F-1 status who receive a bachelors, Masters or Doctoral degree in an approved STEM field to apply for a 24 month extension of their standard 12 month post – OPT period twice in a lifetime. This allows international students the opportunity to gain additional off campus work experience in their field of study after completion of course studies and post – OPT. The OPT extension does not apply to students completing a degree through ASU Online.
