About the Course

Rapid changes in society have created challenges for individuals and their communities. All elements of the healthcare system need professionals with skills and expertise to promote individual and community mental health.

You will study this course over 12-weeks online, which will require approximately 10 hours of study time per-week including a two-hour online tutorial.

As the course is online you will have the flexibility to study when and at times that suit your work and personal life. Our online learning environment provides engaging and interesting lectures and discussion forums in bite-sized pieces and is available on your PC, laptop, or mobile device.

On completion, you may complete two further units over 12-weeks to earn a Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing (Mental Health Nursing) or expand your nursing career and study a Master of Nursing with IHM.

Details about the Course

Students will learn how to:

  • Apply critical thinking processes, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication to evaluate and administer nursing care delivered to patients within the healthcare system
  • Critically review the roles, functions, and the scope of practice of a nurse in mental health setting
  • Demonstrate leadership within a multidisciplinary healthcare team responsible for delivering excellent therapeutic treatment to patients in mental health settings
  • Perform an assessment of the legal, ethical, social, cultural, and political issues that influence the delivery of person-centered healthcare
  • Recognize, evaluate, and use evidence-based nursing strategies while caring for clients in mental health settings
Course Aims

IHM’s mental health speciality course is a postgraduate course that may lead to a Master of Nursing by enrolling in a Master of Nursing course online or on campus. The course is designed to increase knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundations in nursing science as well as practical knowledge and abilities.

The candidate must be a registered nurse in Australia or their home country.

This Postgraduate specialisation subject from IHM bolsters your career outcomes by providing you a high standard of learning in an efficient timeframe.

Upon successful completion of your Postgraduate Specialised subject, you will receive a certificate that can be shared digitally to demonstrate your growing professional value to current and future employers.

This specialisation can stand alone as an independent achievement or be used as credit toward our Graduate Certificate in Advanced Nursing and Master of Nursing programs if you choose to later pursue a full postgraduate qualification from IHM.
